The University of California has released a new Pear Production And Handling Manual that features in-depth information on successful growing practices. While the manual is primarily geared toward California Bartlett pear production, growers of all pear varieties can certainly pick up good tips. Chapters cover topics such as orchard and tree management including varieties, propagation and rootstock selection, training, pruning, and orchard floor management. A section on irrigation and fertilization covers irrigation systems and scheduling, frost protection, and nutrition. Extensive sections on pest management, and fruit harvesting, storage, and handling round out this essential guide. To order the guide, call 800-994-8849, or go to http://ucanr.org/pear.
