Sprouts May Be Linked To Foodborne Illnesses In U.S.

Regulators are advising people not to eat alfalfa or spicy sprouts under the Evergreen Produce brand because of a possible link to Salmonella.

June 28, 2011

Regulators are advising people not to eat alfalfa or spicy sprouts under the Evergreen Produce brand because of a possible link to Salmonella.

According to a Reuters story, this Salmonella enteritidis outbreak, which has resulted in 20 reported cases and one hospitalization in Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Washington, is not linked to the recent European foodborne illness outbreak involving sprouts.

According to FDA, raw or lightly cooked sprouts have been linked to about 30 cases of foodborne illnesses (mostly Salmonella and E. coli) in the U.S. since 1996.

The recent cases may be linked to sprouts sold in plastic bags marked with an Evergreen Produce label.
