Biodiesel Part II

What you should know about ensuring long engine life.

June 1, 2008

Commercial biodiesel is usually a blend of pure biodiesel, known as B100 with conventional petroleum-based diesel fuel. Engine manufacturers are continually testing biodiesel in their engines and base their recommendations for biodiesel on their testing program. Most engine manufacturers allow the use of B5, which is 5% biodiesel. Some European engine manufacturers allow the use of B100.

It is important to stay within the biodiesel limits established by the engine manufacturers to ensure long engine life. If the engine is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, it is even more important to stay within the limits because using higher levels of biodiesel than recommended could void the warranty. In the next Tool Tip, I will explain how to get information on the proper level of biodiesel for your engines.
