Fruit Fly ID Aids Now Online

Spotted wing drosophila monitoring and identification made easier.

September 14, 2010

Fruit growers who wonder if their crops have been hit by the dreaded spotted wing drosophila (SWD) - or worry that they will be - now have a couple new spots to visit on the Web to go for help.

Growers and others can see vivid images of exactly what blueberries, raspberries and strawberries will look like after SWD lays eggs on fruit after various lengths of time. To see those images, provided by Oregon State University, click here

Another handy online resource, this one for grape growers, can be found here. A document posted Sept. 7, “Spotted Wing Drosophila Monitoring and Management in Oregon Vineyards,” provides hands-on information for trapping the potentially serious pest.
