April is Citrus Strong Month, and to celebrate, California Citrus Mutual (CCM) is hosting the first annual Citrus Stride this Wednesday, April 6th. The 1-mile walk around Capitol Park will benefit food banks across the state and raise awareness of the positive impacts citrus has on California’s health, economy, and environment.

CCM invites government representatives and staff to participate in this event, which is expected to raise at least 100,000 pounds of fresh citrus for community food banks and pantries throughout California. With each Citrus Stride participant registered, 1,000 pounds of citrus will be donated to California food banks through the Farm to Family program, an initiative that helps facilitate food donations while raising overall awareness about food security and support for California growers.

The Citrus Stride will begin at noon on the East Lawn of California State Capitol Park, with a stage program and photo booth kicking off the walk. The program will feature such speakers as Joel Nelsen, President of California Citrus Mutual, and Sue Sigler, Executive Director of the California Association of Food Banks.

They will emphasize the impact of citrus on California’s environment, economy, and communities, which benefit from the dedication of California’s citrus industry to providing fresh and healthy foods. In addition, they will highlight Citrus Strong’s partnership with local food banks, with the goal of donating more than 50 tons of citrus fruits.

All participants must register online to ensure citrus donations to the food banks. Participants will be provided with a free bottle of water and fresh California citrus.
