Closer SC Insecticide Receives Federal Registration

Dow AgroSciences announced today that it has received federal registration of Closer SC insecticide. The insect control product offers targeted control of sap-feeding insects in the tree fruit, citrus, vegetable, and tree nut markets.

According to Dow, Closer SC exhibits a unique mode of action through a novel class of chemistry — the sulfoximines — that combines speed and residual efficacy to provide best-in-class control of aphids.

“Closer SC has performed really well against aphids in our efficacy trials,” says Dr. John Palumbo, Extension specialist from the University of Arizona, who has studied the product in various vegetable crops, including lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage. “It has exhibited quick knockdown of aphid populations, usually within two to three days.”

It also offers control of other damaging insects, including Asian citrus psyllids, mealybugs, and scales.

Dr. Henry Yonce, owner of KAC Agricultural Research Inc. in Deland, FL, has studied the activity of Closer SC insecticide in the citrus and vegetable markets in Florida.

“Closer SC does a good job of controlling Asian citrus psyllids and red scales, and has been exceptionally active on citrus aphids,” Yonce says. “Closer SC has also exhibited good activity against vegetable aphids, knocking down populations usually within three days.”

As the only Group 4C insecticide for specialty crops, a subgroup classified by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee, Closer SC is an important new resistance management tool. “It’s very important to rotate products with different modes of action,” Yonce says. “The more modes of action we have to rotate, the longer it’s going to take to develop resistance.”

In addition, the new insecticide is said to offer residual control that is equal to or better than options that are currently available, which could mean reduced input costs and increased profit potential. It also features a favorable environmental profile with a 12-hour re-entry interval, short preharvest interval, and minimal impact on beneficial insects.

Palumbo notes that the suspension concentrate (SC) formulation also will benefit growers. “The liquid SC formulation of Ccl SC makes it a very easy product to use and allows it to mix well with other products,” Palumbo says. “If users follow product use recommendations, Closer SC can be a very valuable product.”

Dow AgroSciences is anticipating registration of Closer SC insecticide in California in 2015.
