Late Season Rally in Forecast for Florida Orange Crop

For Florida citrus growers, finding silver linings has not been easy of late. One ray of light among the storm clouds of crop protection pressures includes the latest citrus crop forecast from USDA. For the first time in several months, the count has increased, albeit modestly.

According to the latest data from USDA, the all-orange forecast increased 1 million boxes from last month’s count to 68 million boxes. May’s prediction is broken down as follows: 33 million boxes of early, midseason, Navel, and Temple varieties; plus 35 million boxes of Valencias).

To put the latest figure in perspective, it represents a 17% reduction from last season’s final tally.

The May forecast for Florida grapefruit shrunk by 300,000 boxes to 7.8 million boxes.

The next citrus crop report from USDA is scheduled to release on June 9. It will be the next to last one for the 2016-2017 season.
