Time For Nitrogen Application In Almonds

Hard to believe, but it’s about time for postharvest application of nitrogen in almonds. There was a clear and concise post on the subject recently on the excellent blog, “The Almond Doctor,” which is hosted by farm advisor David Doll and several of his colleagues with University of California Cooperative Extension.

According to Doll, nitrogen can be applied anytime after hullsplit up until a few weeks postharvest. In earlier harvested varieties and Nonpareil, nitrogen can be applied shortly after harvest with the first post-harvest irrigation. With later varieties, such as Monterey or Fritz, the application can be made post-hullsplit prior to harvest.

However, he cautions to test first, because if July leaf testing showed high levels, an N application may not be necessary. In any case, here’s the full post.
