Canneries Hope To Encourage Growers To Grow Pears For Processing

According to a news story from the Yakima News Herald, three remaining pear canneries in the Northwest upped wholesale prices to encourage growers to keep canning pear acres instead of switching to fresh market pears or other fruit.

“If we don’t have more of them (price increases) following it, it’s going to be a continual tradeoff [between canned pears and fresh],” says Jay Grandy, president of the Washington-Oregon Canning Pear Association.

Often during harvest, Bartlett growers will take fruit that is smaller or is unattractive to canneries.

“It helps the overall industry stay positive and profitable,” Kevin Moffitt, president of the Northwest Pear Bureau says of the higher wholesale prices at canneries.
