New Zealand Scientists Hope to Prevent Diabetes Through Apple Breeding

Scientists at Plant and Food Research in Auckland, New Zealand, have discovered phloridzin, a natural compound in apples, can reduce the risk of diabetes.

This compound found primarily in the skin can reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes as well as obesity. These scientists are seeking to breed this compound in greater concentrations in the fruit to boost its benefits.

Of course, it goes without saying that these researchers will also keep fruit quality and breeding in mind.

“It’s always got to have the right texture and be crisp and juicy … that’s what people expect from an apple,” Richard Espley of Plant and Food Research tells 1 News Now. “So those qualities must always be maintained, if not improved.”
