Researchers Say it is Time to Scout for Apple Diseases

Kari Peter, Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology at Penn State University, suggests growers need to be wary when it comes to recent weather conditions in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

“Blossoms are open and we’re nearing peak dispersal of the overwintering apple scab spores,” she writes in her latest disease update.

With wet conditions, the conditions for fire blight strikes are also high.

“We’re in the midst of fire blight conditions in the southern half of Pennsylvania, so growers will want to be sure their blossoms are protected.”

Peter offers suggestions on fire blight, scab, powdery mildew, and rust management.
