New York apple growers have a new crop management solution for season-long control of damaging insects and mites. Gladiator insecticide/miticide (zeta-cypermethrin and avermectin), from FMC Agricultural Solutions, recently received state registration, offering a powerful, dual-action control option on 25 labeled apple pests.

“Protecting young fruit, especially from petal fall to first cover, is critical to keeping apples on the tree long enough to harvest,” said Joseph Reed, FMC Agricultural Solutions North America senior technical sales manager. “Gladiator provides that protection, controlling insects and mites quickly while the crop matures.”

Combined with horticultural spray oil, the dual-action chemistries in Gladiator provide quick knockdown and long-lasting residual control of 25 insect species, including codling moth, plum curculio, European apple sawfly, and leafrollers, from petal fall to first cover. This also includes season-long control of 12 mite species, including European rust mite and two-spotted spider mite. Gladiator is the latest addition to the FMC apple and citrus portfolio, providing growers with complete insect protection from dormancy to harvest. It is also labeled for potatoes, pome fruit, stone fruit, vegetables, and other crops.

“There is no such thing as minor fruit damage if it causes the tree to drop the apple,” said Reed. “A single application of Gladiator provides insect control through the first cover and mite control throughout the season. A follow-up treatment will renew your insect protection for maximum harvest volume and condition.”
