Gerawan Farming Shuts Down Table Grape Operations

Gerawan Farming announced it’s planning to fully close its table grape operation effective Feb. 25, 2016.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) from the company, the closure of the table grape operation will affect 2,551 employees. The majority (1,049) of these employees are pickers. Another 949 have pre-harvest positions and 359 are packers. The rest of the jobs are spread out among a number of classifications, such as equipment operators, quality control, office workers and supervisors, among others.

According to the notice, employees in other Gerawan farming operations will not be affected by the closure.

Gerawan Farming is one of the biggest stone fruit and table grape growers in the nation. According to American Fruit Grower® and Western Fruit Grower® magazines’ 2014 Top Grape Growers report, the operation had 2,696 acres of table grapes. Total acreage for the operation, including stone fruit, was 11,974.

When reached for comment, Ronald H. Barsamian, lawyer for the company, said Gerawan Farming has no further statement at this time.
