May 24, 2012 As bad a year as it was for mites last year in the San Joaquin Valley, this year could prove even worse for grape growers. The combination of higher than normal temperatures this spring and a decrease in precipitation from the previous two years makes an ideal recipe for increased mite pressure.
“Last year mites became quite a problem for grape growers, but with the kind of weather we’ve had this year—temperatures in the high 90s very early with generally drier conditions—mites are likely to come on even stronger,” said Mike Ansolabehere, field market development specialist for Valent U.S.A. Corporation. “This year has the potential to be a bad mite year.”
“It’s particularly important in grapes to stay on top of mites,” Ansolabehere said. “If you start finding mites in your vineyards, it’s time to spray.”
