New Wine Hybrid Establishment Cost Resource Available

There’s a new resource available for Finger Lakes winegrape growers (and Great Lakes growers, thanks to climatic similarities) who are interested in producing hybrid grapes. Cornell University economists have studied the costs of starting production of V. vinifera and included their findings in a publication called “Cost of Establishment of Hybrid Grapes in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, 2013.”

The researchers found that the estimated cost of establishing and maintaining a hybrid planting to production (three years) is $30,732 per acre in the Finger Lakes region. This number is based on 50-acre vineyards with land valued at $6,000 per acre. Varieties included Corot Noir, Cayuga White and Vidal Blanc, harvested by machine. Skilled labor was factored in at $20 per hour.
