Oregon Anticipates Large Grape Harvest

“This has been an absolutely stunning growing year,” Doug Tunnell, owner of Brick House Vineyards in Newberg, OR, tells the Portland Oregonian. “Almost too much so.”

The newspaper notes that growers in the state expect a very large harvest this year, as long as a late season rain doesn’t ruin the fruit.

Tunnell and other grape growers throughout the state are actually green pruning.

“Most other farmers who don’t grow grapes probably think we’re completely off our rockers. It’s so against the grain of most any farming I know of,” he says. “By lightening the load for the vine, “it will conserve energy, resulting in more rapid ripening and better concentration — and more magic.”
