Winegrape Industry Offers Scholarships

The Washington Wine Industry Foundation is offering four sets of scholarships for students interested in viticulture or enology. Last year, scholarship awards totaled $18,000. All scholarship applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2012 and are available to high school seniors or graduates and college students currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a college or university viticulture and/or enology program.

• Horse Heaven Hills Wine Growers Scholarship: This $1,500 scholarship was established for students who are residents of Benton, Yakima, or Klickitat counties. The scholarship was created by industry members dedicated to promoting education of grape growing and wine production.

• Walter J. Clore Scholarship: Established in 1997 by the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers, scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 in honor of Dr. Clore’s grape research and lifetime achievements in the field of viticulture and enology.

• John Farmer Scholarship: Includes six scholarships between $500 and $2,000 to students with a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship was established by family and friends of John Farmer, a prominent and much loved and respected winegrape grower.

• S.W. (Bill) Preston Scholarship: Established by Preston Premium Wines and Preston Vineyard, this $3,000 scholarship is awarded to a student studying in Washington. Bill Preston was a visionary in the wine industry and was repeatedly recognized for his achievements, including being the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wine Grape Growers Association and the first inductee to the Legends of Washington Hall of Fame.
