Large Tart Cherry Crop Expected In Michigan

Nikki Rothwell, Center Coordinator for the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center in Traverse City, MI, tells UpNorthLive.com, the tart cherry crop in Northwest Michigan is expected to be the largest since 2009.

USDA estimates approximately 222.7 million pounds will be harvested in July, which is significantly higher than last year’s 87 million pounds.

“That’s a lot of product to move through a limited amount of processing facilities,” Rothwell says. “That’s the challenge of agriculture and the business of supply and demand. You always want that perfect crop where we know we are going to sell it all and we don’t have any leftovers.”

Meanwhile, the Michigan sweet cherry crop is also looking very strong. According to a report from the USDA, the sweet cherry crop in the state is expected to be up 32% from last year.
