An individual associated with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) showed up at an almond huller on Wednesday in California’s Central Valley, according to a bulletin issued by the Western Agricultural Processors Association (WAPA).

The person indicated that they are actually with JBS International of Burlingame, CA, and was onsite to conduct employee interviews for the U.S. DOL National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS).

WAPA, which represents the tree nut industry, including almond hullers and processors, pistachio, pecan, and walnut processors on regulatory and legislative issues, says the request is reasonable. However, it advises members that if such an individual visits your facility, ask for a formal request in writing to conduct the interviews and state that you will forward the request to the association’s legal counsel.

WAPA has been in contact with its legal counsel, the Saqui Law Group, and will review each request.  Members having questions should call WAPA at 559-455-9272.
