In the second of a four-part series on crop protection, we look at new disease control products and label changes that took place in 2008. AgroSource’s FireWall 17WP and FireLine 17WP bactericide/fungicide products now will be marketed by Advan. FireWall (streptomycin) and FireLine (oxytetracycline) are used to protect vegetables and other crops from several bacterial and fungal diseases.

Coronet (boscalid and pyraclostrobin) fungicide seed treatment has received EPA approval for use on brassica, bulb, cucurbit, and legume vegetables.

Reason 500 SC (fenamidone) received a new label that includes carrots and brassica, leafy, and fruiting vegetables. It also allows any crop on the label to be planted immediately following the last application of Reason. The new label is approved in Arizona, Florida, and California.

TerraClean (hydrogen dioxide) can be used in New York on the farm and in the greenhouse. This bactericide/fungicide controls soilborne pathogens and promotes healthy root development.

Cease (Bacillus subtilis,strain QST 713) is a microbial fungicide/bactericide that provides foliar disease control for greenhouse-grown (including tunnels) cucurbits, brassicas, strawberries, herbs, bulb, leafy, fruiting, and root and tuber vegetables, and is registered in all states except Alaska, Nevada, Montana, and North Dakota.

RootShield WP (Trichoderma harzianum, strain T-22) is an improved wettable powder formulation of PlantShield HC. This biological fungicide controls root diseases in strawberries, garlic, leeks, onions, shallots, cucurbits, fruiting and leafy vegetables, as well as greenhouse-grown cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs.

Saf-T-Side (petroleum oil) is now OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) listed. The product is a pre-emulsified smothering oil labeled for a broad range of crops, providing control of insects and disease.

BCS copper fungicide (micronized basic copper sulfate) is EPA registered for use in vegetables and other crops.

Chemtura Corporation and Taminco, Inc. have agreed to use Chemtura as exclusive distributor for Thiram Granuflo (tetramethylthiuram disulfide) in the U.S. The product is used to control disease on strawberries and other crops.

DOW AGROSCIENCES

Nova 40W (myclobutanil) has been renamed and repackaged. This fungicide is now known as Rally 40 WSP and is available in new package sizes.

GOWAN

Gowan reached an agreement with Dow AgroSciences, acquiring the rights to its global zoxamide fungicide business, marketed primarily under the brand names Zoxium, Gavel, Electis, Unikat, and Harpon. Zoxamide is a low-use fungicide used to control oomycete fungi infecting potatoes, vines, and vegetables.

Companion (GB03 strain of Bacillus subtillis), a liquid biological fungicide, was granted a new EPA registration with expanded uses on all food crops.

Equus (chlorothalonil) is now registered in California for use on asparagus and strawberries as a preplant drip for transplants.

Nevado 4F (iprodione) also received the nod in California and can be used on lettuce, onions, carrots, and potatoes. This product is labeled to control lettuce drop and bottom rot in lettuce, botrytis and purple blotch in onions, early blight and white mold in potatoes, and Alternaria in carrots.

Regalia SC (an extract of giant knotweed, Reynoutria sachalinensis) is registered for use in California. This biopesticide can be used on lettuce, strawberries, peppers, and other crops to control a variety of diseases.

Actinovate AG (Streptomyces lydicus) was registered for use in California. The OMRI-listed biological fungicide has a one-hour re-entry interval as well as a zero-day pre-harvest interval. Actinovate AG is also labeled as a soil drench application for root decay diseases.

Revus (mandipropamid) was approved for use on brassicas, bulb, cucurbits, peppers, and leafy vegetables.

Revus Top (mandipropamid and difenoconazole) is registered for use on tomatoes and potatoes. State registrations or specific crop and/or pest uses may still be pending.

Presidio (fluopicolide) is registered for use in leafy vegetables, cucurbits, and fruiting vegetables, including a new California registration on these crops received at the end of 2008. It is also registered in many states for use in brassica (head and stem), bulb, and root vegetable crops (except carrots and potatoes).
