Transplanting tender young cole crops like cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts exposes them to the wide world of pests. Cabbage maggot is one of the earliest threats to brassica crops, since flies are able to zero in on newly planted fields. Providing transplants with protection before they leave the greenhouse is the best way to safeguard crop stands.
Mild winter conditions in the Salinas Valley allow cabbage maggots to develop year-round , says Bill Seaman with DuPont Crop Protection. “Cabbage maggot is a perennial pest and field losses of 4 to 5 percent are common, but can be as much as 20 to 30 percent if populations aren’t detected soon enough. Maggots feed on roots, gradually sapping plant energy and providing entryways for pathogens.
Growers have a recently introduced convenient option for controlling cabbage maggot, he says. “DuPont™ Verimark® insect control powered by Cyazypyr® protects tender vegetable plants from cabbage maggot and other costly insect pests for stronger, healthier, more abundant crops.”
Rotate modes of action
Verimark® offers an effective mode of action (Group 28) against a broad spectrum of sucking and chewing pests, says Seaman. “Along with cabbage maggot, Verimark® provides broad spectrum activity on insects including lepidopteran species, thrips, aphids and leafminers which are all pests that can damage a wide range of vegetable crops.
To control cabbage maggot at transplant, use a tray drench application of Verimark® at a rate of 13.5 fluid ounces per field acre of transplants within three days of transplanting, he says. “Keep the transplants watered to minimize moisture stress and to help ensure the active ingredient translocates through the plant. Verimark® will remain in the treated soil plug even after multiple irrigations. We anticipate about 30 days of residual control.”
To help prevent the development of resistance, I suggest not applying any Group 28 insecticides for at least 60 days after using Verimark® at plant*, he adds.

Stronger start, better yield
Early control of pests such as cabbage maggot can have a major impact on crop establishment, says Seaman. By protecting plant roots and stems, Verimark® increases plant vigor. “It not only protects roots but also older leaves and new growth, so plants stay healthy and are better able to withstand stress. That can result in a higher-quality crop and bigger yields at harvest.”
Field trials near Chualar, California, have demonstrated the control advantage Verimark® delivers over standard treatments. “These trials took place under extreme pest pressure, and Verimark® performed consistently well,” he notes. “In field checks, we occasionally saw a few cabbage maggots in the roots of Verimark®-treated plants, but the maggots were not causing significant feeding damage compared to the non-Verimark® treated plants.”
Above ground, the difference became dramatic as the trial progressed, adds Seaman. “The Verimark®-treated plots had good stands and healthier, more uniform cauliflower plants. And that’s what it’s all about.”
