Better Quality Produce with Cross-Spectrum Insect Control

Image_Tomatoes_DuPontCropProtection_080916Protecting young vegetable plants from key insect pests and the problems they cause pays back all season. An early application of DuPont™ Verimark® delivers cross-spectrum insect control and helps avoid losses from certain insect-vectored diseases. That results in more vigorous stand establishment and stronger, healthier plants.

You’ll see the difference at harvest. When Verimark® was applied to fresh market tomatoes in test plots near Immokalee, Myakka, Parrish and Vero Beach, Florida, treated plots provided an average 15 percent yield increase 60 percent of the time. Other large-plot Verimark® field trials in central Florida show similar results: higher yields and bigger tomatoes.

Pepper producers have seen similar results. “We saw a yield increase as well as excellent efficacy against aphids and some thrips species,” says John Curtis, Ph.D., entomologist and president of Better Crops, Ocala, Florida. Drip treatment with Verimark® after transplant produced more fruit per plant than the standard treatment, he says.

More effective cross-spectrum insect control allows for faster plant growth. That leads to improved pepper quality, notes Norman Thomas, president of Thomas Produce, Boca Raton, Fla. “There was more plant growth on treated plants, and with more canopy there was less sunburn and sunscald. “Verimark® has residual control, which can help lower [pest] populations,” adds Curtis. “I’ve looked at Verimark® on peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers and I think it’s a very valuable tool.”
