As Clemson University ended its fall semester in late December, university president James Barker took some time to recognize a familiar name. Desmond Layne, who also writes the “Stone Fruit” column for American/Western Fruit Grower, received the university’s Rowland P. Alston Sr. Award for Excellence in Public Relations. Layne is the state horticulture program team leader, associate professor of pomology, and Extension tree fruit specialist.
