Micromite Approved For Low-Volume Application To Control Asian Citrus Psyllid In Florida

Micromite 80WGS has been approved for use in low-volume application methods for control of Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) in Florida. Florida’s citrus growers now have additional flexibility when using Micromite and, most importantly, the ability to cover many more acres of citrus in a shorter period of time.

The approval was granted as a Special Local Need under Section 24(c) and became effective June 19, 2009. Micromite, marketed by Chemtura Corporation, is an insect-growth regulator that controls ACP nymphs and reduces egg hatch. Asian citrus psyllids are the cause of citrus greening disease.

Under the approved label for low-volume use, Micromite can be applied at a rate of 2.0 to 5.0 gallons per acre by ground using air-blast or air-assisted spray equipment. Spray nozzles that produce a droplet size with a volume median diameter of 90 microns or larger are required. Micromite can be applied with or without spray oil.

“We’re very pleased Micromite has been approved for this low-volume application because it enables growers to treat crops more quickly and efficiently at critical stages for controlling Asian citrus psyllids,” said Keith Griffith, Chemtura Field Development Representative.

Adult Asian citrus psyllids lay eggs on new flush and the nymphs go through five instars before reaching the adult stage. Micromite can control each immature stage (egg and all nymphal stages) as well as provide residual ACP control on new plant growth. Adult females that come into contact with Micromite-treated tissues will also have reduced egg hatch.

In addition to controlling ACP nymphs and reducing egg hatch, Micromite also controls immature citrus rust mites and citrus leafminers, and reduces egg hatch of citrus leafminers and all citrus root weevils.
