Ed Currie, organic farmer and founder of the PuckerButt Pepper Company, a Fort Mill, SC-based operation that grows, harvests, and sells pepper products, announced the debut of the world’s hottest pepper: Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper.
“We have raised the bar for heat intensity by surpassing the current world record holder, the Butch T Trinidad Scorpion,” said Currie.
Over a four-year testing period, Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper has averaged a rating of 1.474 million on the Scoville Scale, which measures the heat intensity of peppers. For comparison purposes, the Jalapeno pepper has a Scoville Rating of 3,000 to 7,000.
“We want to thank Dr. Cliff Calloway and his scientific team at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, for conducting thorough testing of our seed pods and for their ongoing support,” said Currie.
