Agriculture specialists with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations in Miami intercepted an unusual wood-boring pest at the seaport.

The pest, identified as Xyleborus volvulus (a bark/ambrosia beetle member of the Scolytinae family), was discovered during an intensive inspection of a container of cucumbers arriving from Costa Rica.

According to 7 CFR 319.40-3 (b) (3), any shipment with wood packing materials infested with Scolytinae must be re-exported.

Enforcement of these regulations ensures that exporting countries comply with certification procedures for their wood packing materials.

Oh yes, re-exported is the thing to do ??? How about killing these things, and sending the rest of the shipment back where it came from. Small farmers like my husband, and large farmers across the country struggle to get rid of pests from outside our country.. Like how did they get here, on our little farm in Worcester County ?? Maybe they escaped while some bureaucrat was figuring out how to send them back !!! Beverly Bartolomeo

Are you truly knowledgeable on the subject, ie do you know for certain that the pests which you refer to are invasive species ? Or do you absurdly think that all pests are foreign ? The world is much bigger than your little farm and the U.S. and there is a thing called global trade……
This is what the appropriate authorities are tasked to do, to prevent the introduction of invasive species.

i agree totally!!! how about we start with the 11 million illegal aliens that are employed by your industry .. iam sure there is more than one invasive pathogen among the bunch .. also reproductive rates are incredible have u been to walmart recently ????
