U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) officers working at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry in California discovered on Oct. 2 almost 3,100 pounds of marijuana hidden inside of a shipment of cucumbers.

“CBP officers in San Diego produce results; they’ve started the fiscal year with a significant seizure,” said Pete Flores, CBP director of field operations for San Diego.  “This large seizure keeps narcotics off of our streets and the proceeds out of the hands of criminal organizations.”

A 2009 Kenworth tractor pulling a trailer with cargo manifested as cucumber entered the commercial port of entry on Oct. 1. A CBP officer referred the conveyance for an intensive examination.

CBP officers offloaded the shipment, opened the boxes and discovered large wrapped packages comingled with cucumbers. The contents of the large packages field-tested positive for marijuana  CBP officers extracted a total of 376 packages with an estimated street value of more than $1.5 million.

CBP officers seized the tractor-trailer and the marijuana.

At ports of entry along the California border with Mexico, officers also recently intercepted 528pounds of marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin valued at more than $2.5 million.
