The state of Florida is a step closer to having a comprehensive water policy.

On the second day of the new legislative session, the state Senate voted to pass SB 552 (Environmental Resources). The piece of legislation sponsored by Sen. Charlie Dean (R-Inverness) will enhance the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Best Management Practices program, implement technology and innovation to help preserve and protect Florida’s water resources, expedite the protection and restoration of the water flow and water quality in the aquifer and Outstanding Florida Springs, and ensure the development and implementation of uniform water supply planning.

One day later, the Florida House of Representatives followed suit.

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam issued the following statement regarding the legislation’s passage:
“After years of hard work, the Florida Legislature has passed meaningful water policy reform that will help tackle Florida’s biggest long-term challenge — water. This legislation will address the needs of our growing population and economy, and it will protect our most precious natural resources. This legislation is a desperately needed step forward that helps protect our water in a long-term, science-based and strategic way.”
