Forecast: El Niño Likely To Stay Through Spring

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, there’s nearly a 100% chance that El Niño will continue through Northern Hemisphere winter 2015-2016, gradually weakening through spring.

With this particular climate pattern holding strong, above normal temperatures are expected in a broad section of the U.S. from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest from December through February. In contrast, the Mid-South and Southeast could experience below-normal temps.

Winter season precipitation looks to be at a premium from the upper Great Lakes down to the Ohio Valley as well as the northern Rockies. The entire southern half of the country is likely to see above-normal precipitation, which is welcome news for locations currently enduring drought conditions.
