The grants were part of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Research Initiative. The funding was authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill.

According to an article in Rutgers’ The Daily Targum, the research will focus on downy mildew and the declining health of pollinator populations.

The grant spans five years, with the first two years funded at $2,849,975.

A second project focusing on identifying novel management strategies for downy mildews affecting horticultural crops was awarded $50,000.
