Maine Potato Board And The University Of Maine Create Two New Potato Varieties

The Maine Potato Board and University of Maine have created two new potato varieties for the french fry and potato chip industries. According to an article in the Bangor Daily News (BDN), the new varieties — Easton and Sebec — were developed in partnership with the University of Maine over the past several growing seasons.

Tim Hobbs, director of grower relations for the potato board told BDN the Easton, which is the new french fry variety, was named after a potato farming community in northern Aroostook County.

The variety was created at the University of Maine’s Aroostook Research Farm in Presque Isle. According to BDN, field evaluations conducted since 2004 show the Easton potato will produce higher yields and lighter-colored french fries than the current standard french fry variety.

The other new variety, Sebec, also was developed by the University of Maine and is expected to primarily be useful for potato chip production. This variety was named aftera lake in central Maine, according to the board.
