According to the Suffolk Times, New York legislators are pushing Gov. Paterson to declare a state of emergency for local farmers devastated by record-breaking rainfall.

The initiative would give farmers access to low-interest loans, helping them recoup losses in preparation for next year, if it passes.

The record-setting wet June has drowned entire vegetable fields, ruined strawberry season, and spread late blight.

Vineyards have suffered as well. Sam McCullough, vineyard manager at Lenz Winery in Peconic, told the Times he faces a 30% reduction in production this year.

T’is the nature of the beast with our profession. You are at the mercy of the weather and if you don’t take that into serious consideration then you should go do something else. As the saying goes, “Don’t put all you eggs in one basket.” It hurts but you should be able to survive and work on next year. Low interest loans are ok but not free money from the govt. These loans should be provided by a private institution and not the govt.
