NY Ag Season A Washout
July 23, 2009 Many growers have been devastated by the second wettest June in New York history, and state legislators want the governor to declare a state of emergency.
According to the Suffolk Times, New York legislators are pushing Gov. Paterson to declare a state of emergency for local farmers devastated by record-breaking rainfall.
The initiative would give farmers access to low-interest loans, helping them recoup losses in preparation for next year, if it passes.
The record-setting wet June has drowned entire vegetable fields, ruined strawberry season, and spread late blight.
Vineyards have suffered as well. Sam McCullough, vineyard manager at Lenz Winery in Peconic, told the Times he faces a 30% reduction in production this year.
State Agricultural Commissioner Patrick Hooker will be examining local farms this week to determine the extent of crop damage.
