This is one step before being categorized as being in a moderate drought. June has been a dry month for the state, according to MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa who says parts of the state have received less than one inch of rain in the past month, and the average rainfall is around 3 inches.

“The next drought status will be issued this Thursday. With two rain systems drying up as they moved through Michigan this past week, we could see some areas ranked in the first stage of official drought,” Torregrossa says. “And when we look west at the pipeline of storm systems, the pipeline supply looks pretty slim. We have two chances of widely scattered showers this week in the dry areas of Lower Michigan. Unless something changes drastically, the dry conditions will be worse come this time next week.”
