Perdue Appoints Key Food Safety Leaders

Carmen Rottenberg (L) has been named Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety, and Paul Kiecker (R) was named Acting Administrator for the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue filled two key food safety posts at USDA, the department announced this week.

He is appointing Carmen Rottenberg to Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety and Paul Kiecker to Acting Administrator for the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The two will take on their duties immediately, awaiting a Senate confirmation for their new roles.

Rottenberg and Kiecker are veterans of USDA and Food Safety.

Rottenberg will oversee development, implementation, and enforcement of all of FSIS regulations, policies, and programs. She has been with USDA for six years, and most recently served directly under the previous Acting Deputy Under Secretary, Al Almanza. Almanza retired just prior to the announcement. It was effective July 31.

Kiecker, a 29 year USDA food safety veteran, will manage FSIS’ food safety activities. Kiecker began as a food safety inspector in 1988, and he has held several leadership positions, most recently as Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Field Operations.

“Both Carmen and Paul have dedicated their careers to the mission of food safety, and I am pleased to have appointed them to these important roles within the USDA,” says Secretary Perdue. “I commend the work of the entire USDA’s food safety team for painstakingly safeguarding the food we serve our families every single day.”
