United States Potato Board (USPB) Immediate Past Chairman Brett Jensen of Idaho Falls, ID, passed the gavel on to Carl Hoverson, of Larimore, ND, the USPB’s newly appointed Chairman for 2015-2016.

“This past year has been a great experience,” Jensen said reflecting on serving as USPB’s chairman. “We had some ups and downs with market access into Mexico, but on the whole, we made good progress on behalf of the potato industry, as a board working together.”

Jensen learned the art of growing potatoes from his father, Wayne Jensen. He then started farming on his own in 1994 after attending Rick’s College in Rexburg, ID, and Utah State University in Logan, UT. Today, Jensen grows Russet Burbank potatoes for the fresh market and Ranger Russet potatoes for processing. He is part owner of a fresh-packing shed and also grows wheat, malt barley, alfalfa, and corn. He is a District Chairman for United Potato Growers of Idaho.

As the newly elected leader for 2015-2016, Hoverson also produces Russet Burbank potatoes. His potato crop, however, is for the frozen processing industry.

“My two sons and I grow 5,100 acres of irrigated potatoes for the JR Simplot Company,” he explains. Sugarbeets, wheat, corn, soybeans, canola and navy beans are also produced on Hoverson Farms.

In 2014, Hoverson served as a co-chairman of the USPB International Marketing Committee. He previously served two years on the USPB Domestic Marketing Administrative Committee.

He also has served as the secretary/treasurer of the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association.

In addition to Hoverson being named chairman of USPB, grower membership elected new leadership during its Annual Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO, March 10-12. The following sections list the leadership for the coming year.
