USDA Green Lights Genetically Modified Potato
USDA has approved a potato that is genetically modified to resist bruising, according to an article in the New York Times.
The potato is produced by Boise, ID-based J.R. Simplot Co. and is one of a new wave of genetically modified crops designed to provide benefits to consumers as well as growers, the New York Times article states.
The nonbruising aspect of the potato is similar to that of genetically engineered nonbrowning apples, which were developed by Okanagan Specialty Fruits. The apples are currently awaiting regulatory approval.
