The Passing Of Carroll Haines of Haines Equipment

Carroll Lincoln Haines, 77, of Haines Equipment died Sept. 4 in Presque Isle, ME. He was the son of Frederick and Minnie Haines who founded Haines Manufacturing Co. in Presque Isle and manufactured potato handling equipment.

Carroll’s early years were spent farming potatoes and working in his father’s workshop and then in 1946 Carroll came to Avoca, NY, and started Haines Equipment Inc. He worked side by side with his wife Patricia for almost 63 years.

Haines purchased Norris Manufacturing in the 1940s and then bought Boggs Manufacturing of Wayland, NY, in the early 1970s. Later, he became a Lockwood dealer, which complimented the business.

He served his country during the Korean War and was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church. He also served on the board of Bank of Avoca and was involved in numerous potato and community service activities.

Although he was 77 when he died, he never retired. He flew his Cessna 182 airplane, delivering parts up and down the eastern shore for his customers which were involved in potato and onion agriculture industry.

Haines is survived by a brother Harold Jr. (Jackie) Haines of Presque Isle, ME and his children: Carol Haines (Marshall) Leach, Holly Haines West, Melody Haines, Patrick (Ruby) Haines, Minnie Haines (William) Brennan, and Peter Haines (Jenny Haag), and 12 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
