The USDA announced Tuesday it had closed offices in five states after receiving threats. While agency officials didn’t disclose the content or nature of the anonymous messages, they do consider them serious.

Offices in Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, and West Virginia were closed until further notice while law enforcement officials determine how credible the threat might be. Agencies include Forest Service and the Food Safety Inspection Service. The agency’s large complex in Beltsville, MD, is among the locations closed.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack informed employees of the closures via memo and informed them they may tele-work or use authorized leave until the situation has been cleared.
