Young Grower Alliance Workshop Focuses On Business Skills

The Young Grower Alliance will offer a one-day workshop geared toward GenNext Growers at the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, PA, on Jan. 27. The workshop is open to all young growers interested in improving business skills. Sessions offered will focus on workforce management, building a better team, clearly defining roles, entrepreneurship, product and market diversification, and improving your business model.

Richard Stup, director of business management services for AgChoice Farm Credit, will focus on the key steps that managers can take to clarify performance expectations, improve workplace communications, and create a more motivated workforce.

A young grower panel including Hallie Butler of Van Horn-Butler’s Orchard, Russell Holmberg of Holmberg Orchards, and Katy Orr-Dove of Orr’s Farm Market will talk about the successes and challenges they have faced on the farm in relation to workforce management and the challenges related to the farm business.

Lynn Kime, a senior Penn State Extension associate, and Winifred McGee, coordinator for the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Program Priority Initiative, will discuss a three-part strategy for building a business and utilizing product diversification.

Mark Gagnon, entrepreneurship coordinator at Penn State University, will discuss the importance of a business model and attendees will complete a business model, for their operations.
