  1. Did this video provide any real solutions to the drought problem ? Controling weeds, managing pests and fine tuning the irrifation system are things any grower would do regardless of the water supply. The video mentuoned the importance of “knowing your soil” but failed to explain that it could be the source of survuving drought conditions. Benefical bacteria in the soil produce water through multiple mechanisms including 1.during photosynthesis. the photosynthetic bacteria are ten times more effective than plants.
    2. During Denitrification and nitrificatio. Soil bacteria run the Nitrogen Cycle. 3. During decomposition of organic matter in the soil.
    4. The bacteria store the water in the biofilm that surrond the plants roots ( just where it is needed by the plant ). Research has shown that the amount of water produced by the bacteria in a high organic soil would allow growers to reduce irrigation requirements by 50% Products containing necessary consortium of bacteria to provide these benefits are available.

    1. Unfortunately in California, organic matter in soils here is almost nonexistent due to the high temperatures encountered over the summer period here. Most soils are below 1.5%. Our evapotranspiration rates here are as high as ..3 inches per day during summer months. Using drip irrigation and weed free soil will help, but the lack of water will reduce crop size and quality in many areas. Under irrigating with poor quality water will concentrate salts in the root zone and will make matters worse. Applying additional water to maintain acceptable salt levels may be required if possible. We need additional water storage and movement of water to the south to correct our problem.
