Florida Citrus Season Finishes on up Note
July 16, 2019 The 2018-2019 Florida citrus season is officially in the books. And according to the final citrus crop estimate from USDA, it was a campaign worth noting. The all-Florida orange estimate finished at 71.6 million boxes (30.4 million boxes of early mids and navels, plus 41.2 million boxes of Valencias), which was a 200,000 box increase from last month and up nearly 27 million boxes overall from last season’s Hurricane Irma-throttled total.
Florida’s grapefruit numbers also improved over last season (4.51 million boxes vs. 3.88 million boxes). Despite tallies for both oranges and grapefruit still a long way from the industry’s heyday of the late 1990s, the yields show a sector pointed back in the right direction.
