Florida Orange Crop Estimate Climbs Again

As the 2015-2016 Florida citrus season comes in for a landing, it’s safe to say the ride for growers and processors has been a turbulent one. From the surprising season opening estimate of 80 million boxes of oranges back in October, to a mid-season slump at 69 million boxes, to now.

According to USDA, the state’s 2015-2016 orange crop estimate presently stands at 81.4 million boxes, up 300,000 boxes from last month’s estimate. This marks four months in a row of gains following a lengthy losing streak.

The estimated breakdown for June is as follows: 36.1 million boxes of early, midseason, Navel, and Temple varieties; plus 45.3 million boxes of Valencias.

The overall grapefruit estimate came in at 10.85 million boxes, the same as last month’s count.

The final USDA report for the 2015-2016 Florida citrus season is scheduled for July 12.
