Cornell University is offering a workshop for commercial tomato or potato growers interested in improving late blight control. The workshop, slated to be held Monday, Feb. 29, from 1-4 p.m., will focus on using the updated Cornell Late Blight Decision Support System (DSS), which is a customized late blight forecast tool.

The workshop will be held at Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Ontario County, 480 N Main St, Canandaigua, NY, and via Skype at CCE Erie County, 21 Grove St, East Aurora. 2.5 New York State DEC pesticide credits, and CCA units, will be available.

The Late Blight Decision Support System uses temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall information from nearby weather stations, each grower’s varieties (thus their late blight susceptibility), and their sprays applied. It also uses the location of the farm along with National Weather Service point weather forecasts to predict days in advance when a fungicide spray will be needed.

There is no fee, but if you are interested in attending, register by Wednesday, Feb. 24. Contact Carol MacNeil, CCE Cornell Vegetable Program: [email protected] or 585-313-8796. CCE Erie County participants contact Eva McKendry: [email protected] or 716-652-5400 x150. Participants at both sites need to bring a wireless internet-capable laptop, or arrange for a loaner when you register for the event.
