July 2019 Turns up Heat on All-Time Temperatures Around the World

July is normally the warmest month of the year globally. This year was no exception.

If you’ve been thinking that it’s been feeling hotter than usual lately, you’re not imagining things and not alone. According NOAA scientists, global land and sea surface temperatures rose 1.71°F above the 20th-century average of 60.4°F, making it the hottest month overall in the government agency’s 140-year-old data files.

The previous hottest month on record was July 2016.

Year to date, 2019 is tied with 2017 as the second warmest January through July so far. In addition to the heat, record-low sea ice in the Arctic was recorded in July, surpassing the previous historic low measured in July 2012.

Records aren’t just falling when it comes to the heat. Prolific precipitation also has been an issue, especially in parts of the U.S.

July Heat By the Numbers*

  • Nine of the 10 hottest Julys have occurred since 2005 — with the last five years ranking as the five hottest.
  • July 2019 also represented the 415th consecutive month with above-average global temperatures.
