U.S. Asks Australia for Help With Surging Apple Surplus

Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) reports the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources will soon begin an import risk analysis of apples from the Pacific Northwest.

APAL says this comes from a direct request from the U.S. government. This import risk will assess any biosecurity risks and import protocols. A draft of the findings is expected to be released for 60-day public comment by March 2019.

“One of Australia’s greatest assets is that it is largely free of the pests and diseases of many other apple and pear producing countries,” APAL Chief Executive Phil Turnbull stated. “Protecting this biosecurity status requires fresh produce imports to meet robust biosecurity protocols.”
