North Korea Says it has Created a Monster Peach

Forget about “James and the Giant Peach,” because Kye Ryong Il, head of North Korea’s pomology research institute at the state’s agricultural research center, says he and a team of researchers have created a cold-hardy peach that boasts a large size.

The variety announcement is one of 40 different “superior” fruit cultivars including 17 peach varieties that have been created by North Korea.

Kye says the variety named ‘Sukchon Peach No. 3’ will grow to between 1.1 and 1.5 pounds in weight. The peach can tolerate temperatures as cold as -22°F.

North Korean institute says the fruits could be grown “anywhere.”
