Uncertainty for Growers as New Tariffs to be Imposed by China

Reuters reports a second round of tariffs were imposed by China on U.S. fruits and nuts in the past few weeks and will go into effect on July 6. An additional 25% tariff will be levied on U.S. agricultural goods such as vegetables, nuts, and fruit, according to the Yakima Herald-Republic.

The total duties on fruits will be about 50%, according to Reuters.

China is the United States’ third-largest export market of fresh cherries, which was worth about $605 million in 2017.

Mark Powers of the Northwest Horticultural Council says U.S. apple and pear shipments will be harder hit as there is more competition in the export market.

“These tariffs amount to some serious money and it makes it difficult to compete,” Powers told Reuters.
