Queen Elizabeth Gets Her Own Vegetable Patch
June 16, 2009 Queen Elizabeth II gave her royal seal of approval to the plot Sunday where royal gardeners are growing tomatoes, runner beans, onions, leeks, and carrots, reports AFP news wire.
Vegetables were last grown at Buckingham Palace during World War II, when the royal family tried to encourage Britons to grown their own vegetables at a time of rationing.
The 33 foot by 13 foot plot is meant to help the survival of threatened types of seeds and will be cultivated without chemicals.
AFP quoted Claire Midgley, the palace’s deputy garden manager saying, “We’re not only helping to keep old varieties alive, but we’re also preserving heritage and history.”
