New York Faces Grape Glut
Growers are looking to out-of-state wineries to purchase their excess grapes.
Because New York’s winegrape harvest is on track to yield a surplus, Cornell Cooperative Extension, along with New York Wine & Grape Foundation, are partnering to market the grapes to other states.
Foundation president Jim Trezise described it as acting as “matchmakers,” with the goal of helping growers sell all their grapes this year, while also building an out-of-state market.
Growers can place classified ads for their grapes on the Finger Lakes Grape Program website. This is the first time the site has been used to target buyers from other states.
Trezise has been contacting out-of-state wineries to spread the news about the New York wine grapes for sale, with hopes that states that have lost grapes due to bad weather will be in the market for some of New York’s supply.
