By The Numbers: Latest Fruit Production Trends in the U.S.

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has released its 2023 production report for non-citrus fruits. According to the government reporting agency, in 2023, the nation’s utilized production for the 21 estimated non-citrus fruit crops totaled 16.2 million tons, up 5% from 2022. In terms of utilized fruit production, the three largest crops were grapes, apples, and strawberries, which combined for 79% of the non-citrus fruits total in 2023. Bearing acreage totaled 1.84 million, down 1% from the previous season.

Apples

In Oregon, apple utilized production totaled 157 million pounds in 2023, up 21% from the previous year. Value of utilized production was $47.3 million, up 21%t from 2022. In Washington, apple utilized production totaled 7.38 billion pounds in 2023, up 25% from the previous year. Value of utilized production was $1.99 billion, down 4% from 2022.

Sweet Cherries

In Oregon, sweet cherry utilized production totaled 38,450 tons in 2023, up 35% from the previous year. Value of utilized production was $63.6 million, up 2% from 2022. In Washington, sweet cherry utilized production totaled 205,730 tons in 2023, up 47% from the previous year. Value of utilized production was $290 million, down 27% from 2022.

Grapes

In Washington, all grape utilized production totaled 339,350 tons in 2023, down 18% from the previous year. Value of utilized production, at $309 million, was down 22% from 2022. Wine grape utilized production was 159,350 tons, down 34% from 2022, while juice grape utilized production was up 5% at 180,000 tons in 2023. The value of utilized wine grape production totaled $245 million, down 26% from the previous year, while the value of juice grape utilized production was $63.9 million, down 2% from 2022.

Pears

In Oregon, pear utilized production was 235,080 tons in 2023, up 14% from the previous year. Value of utilized production was $117 million, up 24% from 2022. In Washington, pear utilized production totaled 266,710 tons in 2023, down 8% from 2022. Value of utilized production was $131 million, down 19% from 2022.

Blueberries

In Oregon, blueberry utilized production totaled 129 million pounds in 2023, down 23% from the previous year. Value of utilized production was $146 million, down 24% from 2022. In Washington, blueberry utilized production was 137 million pounds in 2023, down 22% from 2022. Value of utilized production was $78.4 million, down 57% from 2022.
